Luxury heritage home gets a full house fit out including CCTV, alarm and intercom system

This luxury heritage home in Sydney’s Inner West needed a serious makeover when it came to tech – which saw it get state of the art home theatre equipment, energy efficient lighting and a CCTV/security/intercom system.

The scale of the project meant we had 3-4 of our techs on site for approximately 3 weeks, running new cables for data, WiFi boosting, free to air TV, Foxtel and speakers.

Highlights of the project include:

• Fitout of a home theatre room fitout on the top level of the house
• Supply and install of zoned audio throughout the house, including around the rear pool area and rear garden/entertaining decks and garage.
• Master bedroom with 55” Samsung QLED with Sonos Beam, mounted onto fireplace with all cables running back to central hub on lower level of house
• Changed out 130 old halogen downlights through the property to energy efficient LED downlights for savings on electricity and improved fire safety
• Supply and install of a smart phone compatible CCTV, alarm and intercom system

For this job we actually came in after the star ceiling/step up and lighting was already completed. The client had essentially struggled to find a home theatre installer who would take on the rest of the project for a reasonable cost.

That’s where we came in, and after listening to their needs and wants we quoted them based on the room, style and budget.

Highlights of this installation: audio and video calibration

After fitting a 7.2 surround sound system with an Epson 9400 – black projector and 130” screen, the cinema sound and image experience in this room is AMAZING!!!

This is also down to the fact that the client requested a full audio and video calibration. For TV’s and projectors this means you get the right skin tones, clarity and clarity from your picture; and for speakers and home theatre audio it can make a big difference to the overall soundstage and sonic clarity you experience.

This client wanted an outdoor home theatre experience, so the family could make the most of their back deck area.

Cabling was run from down in the cupboards for ease of access to devices, while the fan meant we had to run cables in ducting through the wall and up across the top framing at the peak of the ceiling – and use a 900mm drop pole for the projector.

This project was a fairly small job by our standards – and we didn’t supply any AV components, but nevertheless the customer is stoked with the final outcome. We are publishing it to show the diversity of jobs we take on, and what our team of installers are capable of!

This client had an existing opening in his wall and wanted it blocked in, and the TV installed on this new surface. We opted to create a recessed space in the opening into which we hung the TV. This means it sits flush which makes it look more sleek, streamlined and unobtrusive.

For this installation our team went to work and:

• Blocked in the wall, with a timber frame and sheeting, after which it was plastered, colour -matched and painted
• Installed the TV on a flat bracket
• We also installed a powerpoint, network and TV point in the wall

This also means any renovation works we do take into account the number and location of power points and TV/network points in advance, so you are not left scratching your head after the installation has taken place.

This was a tricky installation for us, as the location of the windows restricted access for cabling, so we had to go sideways through the wall cavity to conceal these. Otherwise we made it all happen for the client, who is a sports fan that will be able to fully appreciate viewing on the Sony OLED TV or 120” screen.

Our client decided to renovate their entire stunning waterfront apartment and commissioned us to revamp two rooms:

Custom Soundproof Home Theatre

Originally the client wanted this space to be a wine cellar/cigar room but they ultimately decided to opt for a more practical, versatile room focused on home theatre.

After conducting an initial consultation with the client, to understand what they wanted from the space, we worked through the design with their builder and designer to make sure it ticked all the boxes and resulted in a truly exceptional home theatre experience.

The undoubted highlights of this project are:

• The multi-functional acoustic panelling that surrounds the room, which eliminates echo and ensures acoustic clarity – but also houses the audio for the room. The audio installed here also features Dolby Atmos technology, which is the latest way to get immersive, directional 3D surround sound – with sound pushed to a particular speaker location in the room.
• The Optoma UHD65 4k Projector, a state-of-the-art 2,200 lumen 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) unit capable of delivering ultra-sharp images with breathtaking picture quality.

The complete system is also controlled with an RTI processor linked with an Apple iPad which makes it easy enough for even kids to use. Along with this we have supplied the Manhattan New Yorker Pro seating in two rows upholstered in genuine black leather, for the ultimate in ergonomic home theatre comfort.

Once the system was installed we also carry out a full audio and video calibration to make sure the system is running at peak performance.

There are times when tweaks and tune-ups are sufficient. And there are times when a complete overhaul of an interior space is necessary. When the latter time comes, a complete room makeover is what you need to achieve the home theatre solution you are looking for.

What the Client Needed from Us

This particular case study begins with a query via the online form. This is a great way to get in touch with us, as you can give us all the details you need and then we will get in touch with you. In this case, the customer needed their old space stripped, and a full room transformation carried out. This is a big job, with lots of planning required before the execution takes place. Despite this, our team was confident that they could get the job done in only a few days.

Re-orientation

However, there was an issue. 

The client’s plan and outline did not, in fact, match their interior space. This caused a hold-up on the project while the team re-calibrated the design to fit the reality of the interior space.

In the end, this re-orientation did not cause too much of a problem for the team, the client, or for their project. While the Universal team does request that you come to us with as much information as possible, and you do your best to ensure that this information is correct and complete, it is not the be-all and end-all of our services.

Stripping out the room

Before we could begin, the room had to be prepared. This meant stripping out the space and priming all the surfaces. As stated, this is a complete room makeover — not an upgrade or tune-up — and our services really are complete. We take everything out of the room, achieving a blank canvas on which to work.

Relocating critical data and electrical services

Data and electrical connections are vital for any home theatre. With this in mind, the next step was placing these connections in the right places throughout the space. We run all the AV cabling through and into the room and installed the sound solution and projector.

Reorganising access

A room makeover is quite a serious undertaking, and one that requires a serious reorganisation of the space. This means reconfiguring access. We blocked the back door entrance and updated the step access to make the space more suitable for its new role as a home theatre.

Plastering and carpeting

We provide a full-service solution on every property that we work on. This means finishing the job completely with plastering and carpeting work.

Boosting the WiFi

The client had voiced concerns that his WiFi was not strong enough in the home theatre space. We put this right by installing a new WAP system to boost signal strength and quality and installing a second zone of audio in the alfresco area, along with enhanced controls.
