Double garage conversion creates huge home cinema space with seating and storage

Ever thought about converting your double garage into a feature-filled home theatre space?

Well, that is exactly what the brief from this client was. Their double garage was converted into a very generous 6m x 4.5m cinema room. This made use of our team’s expertise to carry out the building/structural works, which included framing off the room and installing doors to create a separate storage area for their children’s stuff. We also took care of carpentry/cabinetry, painting, carpet installation – as well as the supply and installation of all the selected AV and tech gear.

Project highlights included:

• A full cinema room fitout with 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos sound, including 2 x subwoofers, 2 x in ceiling fronts, and 2 x pairs of in-ceiling rears
• Manhattan New Yorker Pro custom cinema seating, with tiered step up for second row of seating and step LED lighting
• Building of step-up
• Carpet and curtains supplied and installed
• Installation of security camera system throughout the house
• Installation of Ubiquiti WiFi system for strong signal throughout the property
• Full audio and video calibration, for perfect picture and sound

Before we look at the gear we installed, let’s first understand the different channel/speaker combinations you can have in a surround sound system.

Understanding surround sound channels and speaker setups

If you are wondering what the numbers you see when buying a surround system are, here is an explainer.

The first thing to know is that surround sound systems are usually described using three digits – like 5.1.2, where:

• “5” = the number of channels/speakers you will have at ear level
• “1” = the subwoofer speaker, for those thumping, low bass frequencies
• “2″ = the number of overhead channels/speakers, as in an Atmos system, typically in the ceiling or wall

If there are only two digits – like 5.1 – your surround sound system does not have any dedicated height channels. Some common setups you will see include:

• 5.1 = 5 speakers at ear level, with a single dedicated subwoofer
• 5.1.2 = as above but with two additional height speakers, often above you in the ceiling/wall
• 7.1.2 = with 7 speakers at ear level, a subwoofer and two dedicated height speakers above
• 7.2.4 = as above, but with 2 subwoofers, and 4 height speakers added in the ceiling/wall

For this client, a recently purchased home needed a security system installed, a WiFi upgrade, connection to the NBN and help sorting a spaghetti junction of cables. We installed a simple rack to tidy up the customers cabinets, a router for the NBN connection and a Ubiquiti WAP for the WiFi coverage.

Custom starlight ceiling takes home cinema to the next level

This client initially only wanted a tv and wall mounted in this room, but after chatting through their project they also opted for a custom starlight ceiling.

Our starlight ceiling installations use fiber optic filaments to create the effect of the night sky. This creates a variety of star constellations and inspiring visual effects on your ceiling – and it can even be integrated so you can control it via your home automation setup.

Unlike using prefabricated panels which are a plug & play installation, a custom star ceiling is more labour intensive – but you get a much more realistic and natural looking night sky.

Installing a custom starlight ceiling

Work starts with measuring up the room and working out how many stars (fibres) are going to work in the space.
We then mark out the ceiling for the installation, and climb into the ceiling and install the fibres individually. Next step is to drill the tiny holes into the ceiling, followed by threading all the fibres through. Our painter then comes through and sprays the ceiling surface black, which also helps to hold the fibres in place. Final step is to trim all the fibres back and connect the electrical wiring from the ceiling to the switch room.
The outcome is always amazing and adds that extra WOW factor to any cinema room!

This home was getting an extensive refurbishment and reno, and we were involved for around 12 weeks onsite which gives you some sense of the works involved.

The client was very clear they wanted rock solid WiFi through the property, and also requested a star ceiling in the home cinema room. The nerve centre of all the equipment we installed as a data rack in the dedicated control room, from where all the data cabling runs, and to route Foxtel/free to air connections throughout the house.

In the main bedroom we had to install in-wall cabling wall using chaser as they are concrete walls to connect the customers existing Bose audio system and Samsung 55” TV. On the ground floor we supplied a Samsung 75” TV wall mounted with Sonos amps to 2 pairs of in-ceiling Jamo stereo speakers.

This home theatre installation project started out as a fitout of a small home cinema room, but the client ended up expanding the scope and also wanted a cinema solution in the living room, as well as rock-solid WiFi distribution throughout the house.

This client wanted a TV on a wall in the open plan living area which was non-existent – so we had to build a feature wall. A stonemason then covered it in natural stone and we installed a 75” TV and soundbar – to create a stunning focal point for their living area. The end result is a seamless finish, with no visible wires – and all carried out by our team in record time!

Looking for fully immersive 7.2 surround sound with all the toys?

This client wanted exactly that – and we were all too happy to oblige.

For this project we had to install power to the front-of-room cupboard where the components were located, along with network points and data points. All cables had to be run through the ceiling and in-ceiling speakers cut in to create the 7.2 surround system. We also installed a 43” Samsung TV in the main bedroom along with power, network and a TV point on a swing arm bracket. All in all our techs were on site 1.5 days for the complete installation, and finished off with a full audio and video calibration.

• Yamaha Aventage RXA1080 7.2 channel amp, which has 110W at its disposal – for an amazing soundstage, which can make your music and movies sound awesome!

If you are not sure what 7.2 surround sound is – here is a short explainer.

What is 7.2 Surround Sound?

7.2 adds surround sound in the form of two rear surround back speakers, which are in addition to your standard surround speakers at the side or rear.

If you are after truly immersive sound then a 7.2 system will get you that, but you do need the right source to get ‘true’ 7.2. This includes BlueRay discs and 4K streams that have Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD or DTS-Master HD encoding. You can get 7.2 simulated via a 5.2 AV receiver, but each rear surround speaker does not get discrete, specific information.

With block sizes around the country getting smaller by the year, we are getting used to working with compact spaces. A case in point is one of our recent installs, where we only had 3m x 3m to work with.

This space is actually narrower, but we still managed to squeeze in a ton of tech into the room – including a Grandview 110” fixed screen, BenQ 4K projector and 7.1 surround sound. No one is going to be missing any of the action with that screen, and with quality, custom Jamo in-ceiling speakers – the roar of the crowd, music and dialogue are all going to be crystal clear.

If you need proof that small spaces can have all the home theatre bells and whistles, then this install is it! We only had a compact space to work with – around 3m x 3m – but it was the only room in the house the client could use for a home cinema.

Despite this we managed to squeeze quite a lot of cutting edge home theatre components into the room – including 5.1 surround driven by the beast: a Yamaha Aventage RXA780 amplifier, alongside the stunning BenQ 4K projector – with a star ceiling to finish it all off.

We also carried out zoned audio for

• An adjacent dining room, with in-ceiling speakers driven by the superbly competent Sonos amp
• Weatherproof outdoor speakers for the pool/backyard area
