Summary

This was a deluxe fitout for a large family home which has taken our team two years on and off to complete.

It started with pre-wiring at the frame stage for 12 zones of audio running off Sonos Amps and Origin Acoustics in-ceiling speakers. The client also wanted TVs throughout the home, all with Sonos Arc and soundbars handling the audio. The centrepiece of this build was the impressive 8m x 5.5m home cinema room with 14 custom cinema style seating, in three tiers with 3 in the front row, 5 in the middle, and 6 in the rear. A dramatic red and black fabric wall with integrated LED lighting created a truly immersive atmosphere, and made sure the room acoustics are spot on.

Elite Screen 158” with seating and starlight ceiling

The client wanted a large projector screen, so we recommended the Elite Screens 158” which fits the dimensions of the room and viewing distance perfectly. You definitely get a cinema-like experience at home with its massive 4m diagonal size,and is perfect for bingeing, sport or movie nights. The 2:35.1 aspect ratio perfectly matches cinemascope films, eliminating black bars for a truly immersive viewing experience. The high-quality fabric the screen uses ensures your images will be crystal clear with accurate colour reproduction and optimal brightness.

We also installed a star ceiling. This is a clean installation with no ceiling plaster holes, using intelligent fibre optic dispersal tech. This uses a few high-lumen LEDs to light your entire ceiling.. It also has wireless control and controlled throught the control4 automation within the control system, so you can customise colours, sequences, and transitions – and get the right atmosphere for movie night.

From Lounge to Luxury 11-Seat Dolby Atmos Home Theatre With Star Ceiling + Perfect Acoustics

For this project, we converted a large existing room that was used as a lounge (8m x 4m), into a spacious 11-seat home cinema. The scope of work was for a 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos home theatre system, an acoustically transparent screen with acoustic fabric walls and a 750 fibre star ceiling. Along with this, the customer wanted to have 3 rows of seating and the room carpeted which was all completed by our team.

What are fabric walls?

Installing the acoustic fabric walls.

Fabric walls are installed where large areas need an acoustic treatment, like when floor-to-ceiling coverage is needed. It usually consists of a perforated acoustic fabric stretched between parallel tracks, sometimes with a foam polyester fibre or fibreglass backing.

Fabric walls are designed to absorb sound and minimise sound waves from bouncing around your room. This helps to minimise reverberations and echo in smaller spaces that lead to unclear and muddied sound. They are usually installed as individual panels or larger sections that cover an entire wall. In this space we opted for fabric walls over the side walls.

The benefits of this type of this acoustic treatment are:

  • Speech and dialogue are clear and easy to understand.
  • Bass sounds are not too boomy.
  • Improved overall soundstage.

One thing to look for when installing acoustic panels or fabric walls is the NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating. This is a measure of how much sound it can absorb. For example a NRC rating of .80 means that the panel will absorb 80% of the sound it is exposed to.

The Helsyn 130 inch acoustically transparent screen solves a common problem. Traditional screens block speakers in-wall speakers installed behind them, muffling the sound. This screen’s fabric weave allows sound to pass through it, so the speakers can deliver crisp dialogue and immersive effects without sacrificing the big picture on the 130-inch display. It also means sound does not bounce off the screen and muddy the soundstage.

We also installed a star ceiling. For this job we install the fibres individually by drilling the tiny holes into the ceiling, followed by threading all the fibres through. Our painter then comes through and sprays the ceiling surface black, which also helps to hold the fibres in place. Final step is to trim all the fibres back and connect the electrical wiring.

Acoustic Excellence: Garage Conversion with Home Office and Fabric Walls

For this project we converted a single garage ( 6500mm x 4000mm), into a sizeable, spacious 7-seat home cinema. The scope of work included insulation, gyprocking, painting, carpeting, cabling and a comprehensive system fitout. This included fabric walls to enhance the acoustics in the room, with wall-mounted LED light strips for visibility.

We also constructed an office space behind the home cinema, complete with custom cabinetry and a stone benchtop. This involved framing out a wall, installing a door, and carpeting the floor to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing workspace. The client also required installation of a split system air conditioning unit.

To make sure this space had the best sound quality possible we installed fabric walls and slat acoustic panels. These are known as acoustic treatment, which help to absorb sound waves and prevent them from bouncing around a room and causing distortion. Carpet can also help the acoustics of a room.

Full home reno gets home cinema theatre cave with cinema-style seating and lots of AV toys

If you are going to go the whole hog and renovate your whole house, you may as well spec it out with all the toys and tech – which is exactly what this client did.

Not only did we fit out an awesome home cinema, but we also installed a stonemason wall which is invisible from the hallway. It’s like entering a hidden grotto, full of some pretty awesome AV kit! They also wanted the full cinema experience, which involved installing a step up or riser for the two rows of cinema seating. The back row has a row of 5 seats, with 2 rows of 2 on the bottom, with a step in between.

The terrace outdoors got a 75 inch Samsung TV, as did the lounge room, paired with Sonos’s excellent soundbars handling the audio.

As you can see from the before/after shots, we really got our hands dirty on this one! From the design, to the structural works – which included creating walls, building the riser/step up and installing all the hardware, cabling and software.

Epson LS1200 4K laser projector

If you want amazing image quality the Epson EH-LS12000 should be on your shortlist. It is a 4K Pro-UHD laser projector which pumps out vivid and dynamic images. It’s got awesome brightness levels, UHD upscaling and is also super easy to setup. The projector’s secret is its advanced 3LCD technology, which uses three separate LCD chips to produce the colour signal for each frame. The result? Exceptional colour accuracy and an incredibly bright, clear picture!

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A4A amplifier

The Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A4A is a 7.2 channel home theatre receiver with Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay 2, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. It has plenty of grunt for driving all your speakers and decoding all the major surround audio codes. It is also easy to set-up, scores well with a well-designed remote control and is great value for money for the features you get.

Manhattan Cinema Seating with a riser

We supply and install industry-leading Manhattan Seating home cinema chairs, which not only have Gold Class quality comfort and features – they are made right here in Australia! These are manufactured with a sturdy, commercial standard timber frame with individual ‘pocket springs’, high‐density foam, ultra‐breathable cloth and a choice of top grain leather or fabric upholstery. This client opted to install a step up or riser for a rear/second row of luxury cinema style seating d – just like in a real cinema! This means everyone has a great view of the action!

Sonos Arc + Beam soundbars

Sonos are leaders in wireless audio, with a modern design and an app that allows you to control all the speakers around your home. The Arc is the brand’s premium soundbar, with Dolby Atmos, crystal clear dialogue with Speech Enhancement, and Trueplay tuning technology which matches the sound to the layout of your room. The Beam is a step down from the Arc, in a more compact form. Both can sync with your TV remote, use your existing WiFi network for rock solid audio and are compatible with all your favourite music streaming services.

From Storeroom to Home Theatre: Client-Centric Design and Superb Craftsmanship

Summary: Storeroom to star room

For this project, we transformed a 5.5m x 4m storeroom into a custom home theatre, showcasing our expertise in delivering a tailored home theatre room from concept to reality. Initially, the room was an empty space used for storage by the client. After consulting with them and providing a detailed quote, we completed a 3D design for the layout. The project unfolded over a number of stages, with the star ceiling and cinema-style seating still to be installed.

We produced a seamless transformation of a previously unused storeroom into a sophisticated entertainment space. The tiered seating platform,with strategic downlighting, acoustic treatment and integrated air conditioning is all designed for optimal comfort and enjoyment. We also installed a data rack outside the room for component storage, as the client did want this to clutter the home theatre space. We really got our hands dirty on this project, with a complete makeover of a basement – which we transformed from a shell into a very stylish and well-specced home theatre room.

We adjusted beams, finished off the concrete floor, sheeted the walls, installed cabling, in-wall and in-ceiling speakers – as well as star ceiling panels, carpeting, step profile lighting and custom cabinetry.

Custom Manhattan cinema-style seating

The client wanted a distinctive look for their seating, and went for a beautiful tan brown leather with diamond Bentley-style stitching and stainless steel cup holders. We love it, and so do they!

Manhattan noise solation vinyl

This product is a high-performance soundproofing material designed to enhance privacy by minimising sound transmission. It was installed under carpet in the bedrooms above the home cinema room to block and absorb sound penetration to these areas.

Origin Acoustics speakers

We installed a series of Origin Acoustics speakers – including in-wall fronts, in-wall rears and a pair of in-ceilings to add height for Atmos audio. The brand’s speakers are known for their wide soundstage and accurate imaging – which means they reproduce the audio of a source faithfully. That means you get crisp highs, warm mid tones, and powerful bass for a truly immersive audio experience.

Games Room Transforms Into Grown Up Home Cinema

This client wanted to repurpose their now-grown childrens games room into a fully-featured home cinema room!

Our team outdid themselves with a 2 week turnaround for a build that was complex.

Cabling Upgrade

This home theatre installation was no easy feat. For one, we had to cut multiple holes for access just to run the required cabling needed. As an existing room that was built 20+ years ago there was no cabling in location other than a pair of ceiling lights.

Having the right cable installed is essential if you want to get the full benefit of connectivity for your home theatre, especially if you want 7.2.2 multichannel audio (Dolby Atmos) and high speed internet.

Thankfully our AV technicians are some of the best in the business, and are all qualified and experienced cablers.

7.2.2 Dolby Atmos Home Theatre

This client wanted 7.2.2 channel audio – called Dolby Atmos, which is a surround sound format that uses seven main speakers, two subwoofers, and two height/atmospheric speakers. It is a great way to create a truly immersive audio experience, especially for movies and TV shows that have been mixed for Dolby Atmos.

The magic of Dolby Atmos is down to the ceiling-mounted speakers, which direct sound downward and reflect it off the ceiling to produce incredibly lifelike, overhead sound.

Grandview 120” Acoustically Transparent Screen

Besides being a very generous 120 inches, the other neat trick about this projector screen is that it has an acoustically transparent design. This fabric/material allows sound waves to pass through the screen – meaning it helps to absorb sound in the room, not reflect it.

Home theatre room gets the full acoustic treatment, with star ceiling & karaoke

This client initially only wanted a tv wall-mounted in this room, but after chatting through their project they opted to expand the project to include:

  • A custom starlight ceiling
  • Acoustic panels and fabric walls to improve the soundstage in the room
  • A karaoke system, (Bose Karaoke system with AceSonic Touchscreen Chinese Karaoke) as a stand alone feature from the home theatre system
  • 7.1 surround system with Origin Acoustics in-ceiling fronts and over head in-ceiling rears, a Velodyne Impact 12” subwoofer

The space we had to work with had generous dimensions of approximately 4.4m wide x 5.4m deep.

Gear highlights of this installation…

Custom starlight ceiling

Our custom starlight ceiling installations use fibre optic filaments to create the effect of the night sky. This creates a variety of star constellations and inspiring visual effects on your ceiling – and it can even be integrated so you can control it via your home automation setup. Unlike using prefabricated panels which are a plug & play installation, a custom star ceiling is more labour intensive – but you get a much more realistic and natural looking night sky!

The secret is to measure up the room and work out how many stars (fibres) are going to work in the space. The outcome is always amazing and adds that extra WOW factor to any home cinema room! The client can also customise the colour of the stars when they fire up the karaoke machine, so the mood matches the tunes!

As a finishing touch we also added LED strip lights just above the star ceiling as perimeter lighting which can easily be controlled via an iPad or home automation software.

Slat acoustics, fabric walls and curtains = acoustic treatment

After chatting with the client they wanted to optimise the sound in this home theatre room, and we advised slat acoustics, fabric walls and curtains. The fabric acoustical walls (in onyx) and the walls and bulkhead (in Dulux monument) were chosen to give the room a dark sophisticated atmosphere.

The extensive acoustic treatment in the room works to improve the soundstage of the room, it also prevents sound entering other parts of the home and disturbing anyone. Sound from your speakers travels in waves or vibrations through the air, which then bounce off any surfaces in the room. These surfaces include the walls, floor, ceiling, windows and even the furniture.

Acoustic panels and fabric walls are two ways of helping to reduce this effect – and because they are low profile they are easily integrated into any home. Acoustic panels are made from foam or fabric, which helps to minimise reverberations and echo in smaller spaces that lead to unclear and muddied sound. They do this by soaking up sound waves and stopping them bouncing around a room. The curtains along one wall do the same job, add colour and soften the space by reducing the amount of exposed walls.

What is Dolby Atmos?

You may have seen Dolby Atmos branding on the front of a 4K TVs, home theater receiver or latest soundbar. Sound gurus’ Dolby Laboratories developed Atmos to offer an ‘immersive sound’ and ‘multidimensional experience’ for home theater – and is basically surround sound on steroids.

Atmos adds surround channels that come from overhead to any existing surround-sound set-up. Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers direct sound upward and reflect it off the ceiling to produce incredibly lifelike, overhead sound – so rain sounds like it is falling from above. It does this by giving each individual Atmos speaker multiple channels – including front, surround and ceiling-mounted height channels. By comparison Dolby Atmos has the ability to process up to 128 channels of sound, where with a typical 7.1 setup you get a maximum of 8 channels.

How do I get Dolby Atmos?

If you are wondering how to get the Dolby Atmos experience in your home theatre setup you have a few options:

  • A Dolby Atmos-capable A/V receiver with Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (with ceiling firing speakers)
  • Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar
  • You can also add “Atmos modules” – small speakers which fire upwards – to your existing 5.1, 7.1 or 9.1 setup.
  • You can also install ceiling speakers to create the Atmos effect.

Star ceiling is the highlight alongside motorised cinema seating and a 130” fixed frame projector screen

This client wanted an existing room converted into a dedicated home cinema space. They requested a star ceiling, which was integrated into their coffered ceiling. We also painted the room and ceiling, installed in-wall front speakers alongside the 130” fixed frame screen.

Component highlights of this installation include:

  • Yamaha Aventage RXA2a AV receiver, which has seven channels of power, each rated at 100W into 8 ohms. It has 7.1 channels which allows us to run 5.1.2 with two ceiling speakers delivering height signals. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding are both onboard.
  • The Epson TW9400 projector has 4K/UHD1/3LCD technology for amazing colour brightness, a wide colour gamut for professional colour accuracy and an exceptional 4K visual experience.

Custom cabinetry to house all AV components, including the AV receiver and Foxtel box.

Custom starlight ceiling adds atmosphere

Our starlight ceiling installations use fibre optic filaments to give a room real atmosphere, and the effect of the night sky above. It creates a variety of star constellations and inspiring visual effects on your ceiling – and it can all be controlled via your home automation setup. Starlight ceilings are not just for home theatre rooms, you can also install them in other places – including games rooms, reception halls and even kids bedrooms.

Installing the step-up with integrated LED lighting

For this installation we also supplied LED edge lighting to highlight the raised platform or step-up for safety, visibility and that real cinema look.

Manhattan’s New Yorker Pro series cinema seating

For this project we installed Manhattan’s New Yorker Pro series in a two row configuration for the ultimate in ergonomic home theatre comfort. This is an Aussie brand who creates high quality cinema seating with multiple features like a choice of leathers, stitching, and cup holder colours. The Pro series’ outstanding feature is the motorised recliner mechanism with an ultra quiet ‘Stealth’ motor, for silent adjustment, as well as a handmade solid wood frame for rock solid stability and durability.

We first had Universal hang a couple of TVs in our apartment a few years ago where we got great service. So when we bought our new place a few months ago we gave Andy a call to hang another couple of TV’s. Andy and Mick came out a few days later and did a nice job again. Whilst they were here we discussed some thought s about putting in a theatre room into a space that was under utilized. The room was single level tiled floor 7×3.5 with plenty of windows. That discussion lead to a full on installation with a step up built, carpet laid, custom cabinetry, 7 beautiful leather seats, full curtains and a tremendous picture and sound system that has transformed our house and that room to an awesome space. The quality of the installation is excellent and communication through the process perfect to keep us updated and explain the system. Andy and Mick (Mick the master electrician) are great people, professional work and kept our place nice and tidy each day, Sam in the office well organised, pleasant to deal with and kept us up to date and Andy’s team of contractors also great to work with. Zac the cabinet legend built us a fantastic cabinet, James “the blind guy” and his family did a wonderful job of our drapes, the carpet team efficient and friendly people. Everyone we dealt with were awesome. We are so happy we chose Universal Home Theatre Sydney and as you can tell definitely recommend them.
