Stage 1

Stage 2

If you are going to go the whole hog and renovate your whole house, you may as well spec it out with all the toys and tech – which is exactly what this client did.

Not only did we fit out an awesome home cinema, but we also installed a stonemason wall which is invisible from the hallway. It’s like entering a hidden grotto, full of some pretty awesome AV kit! They also wanted the full cinema experience, which involved installing a step up or riser for the two rows of cinema seating. The back row has a row of 5 seats, with 2 rows of 2 on the bottom, with a step in between.

The terrace outdoors got a 75 inch Samsung TV, as did the lounge room, paired with Sonos’s excellent soundbars handling the audio.

As you can see from the before/after shots, we really got our hands dirty on this one! From the design, to the structural works – which included creating walls, building the riser/step up and installing all the hardware, cabling and software.

Let’s take a closer look at this build in more detail.

Gear highlights of this installation…

Epson LS1200 4K laser projector

If you want amazing image quality the Epson EH-LS12000 should be on your shortlist. It is a 4K Pro-UHD laser projector which pumps out vivid and dynamic images. It’s got awesome brightness levels, UHD upscaling and is also super easy to setup. The projector’s secret is its advanced 3LCD technology, which uses three separate LCD chips to produce the colour signal for each frame. The result? Exceptional colour accuracy and an incredibly bright, clear picture!

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A4A amplifier

The Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A4A is a 7.2 channel home theatre receiver with Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay 2, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. It has plenty of grunt for driving all your speakers and decoding all the major surround audio codes. It is also easy to set-up, scores well with a well-designed remote control and is great value for money for the features you get.

Manhattan Cinema Seating with a riser

We supply and install industry-leading Manhattan Seating home cinema chairs, which not only have Gold Class quality comfort and features – they are made right here in Australia! These are manufactured with a sturdy, commercial standard timber frame with individual ‘pocket springs’, high‐density foam, ultra‐breathable cloth and a choice of top grain leather or fabric upholstery. This client opted to install a step up or riser for a rear/second row of luxury cinema style seating d – just like in a real cinema! This means everyone has a great view of the action!

Sonos Arc + Beam soundbars

Sonos are leaders in wireless audio, with a modern design and an app that allows you to control all the speakers around your home. The Arc is the brand’s premium soundbar, with Dolby Atmos, crystal clear dialogue with Speech Enhancement, and Trueplay tuning technology which matches the sound to the layout of your room. The Beam is a step down from the Arc, in a more compact form. Both can sync with your TV remote, use your existing WiFi network for rock solid audio and are compatible with all your favourite music streaming services.

This client initially only wanted a tv wall-mounted in this room, but after chatting through their project they opted to expand the project to include:

  • A custom starlight ceiling
  • Acoustic panels and fabric walls to improve the soundstage in the room
  • A karaoke system, (Bose Karaoke system with AceSonic Touchscreen Chinese Karaoke) as a stand alone feature from the home theatre system
  • 7.1 surround system with Origin Acoustics in-ceiling fronts and over head in-ceiling rears, a Velodyne Impact 12” subwoofer

The space we had to work with had generous dimensions of approximately 4.4m wide x 5.4m deep.

Let’s take a closer look at this home theatre installation project, and how it all came together!

Gear highlights of this installation…

Custom starlight ceiling

Our custom starlight ceiling installations use fibre optic filaments to create the effect of the night sky. This creates a variety of star constellations and inspiring visual effects on your ceiling – and it can even be integrated so you can control it via your home automation setup. Unlike using prefabricated panels which are a plug & play installation, a custom star ceiling is more labour intensive – but you get a much more realistic and natural looking night sky!

The secret is to measure up the room and work out how many stars (fibres) are going to work in the space. The outcome is always amazing and adds that extra WOW factor to any home cinema room! The client can also customise the colour of the stars when they fire up the karaoke machine, so the mood matches the tunes!

As a finishing touch we also added LED strip lights just above the star ceiling as perimeter lighting which can easily be controlled via an iPad or home automation software.

Slat acoustics, fabric walls and curtains = acoustic treatment

After chatting with the client they wanted to optimise the sound in this home theatre room, and we advised slat acoustics, fabric walls and curtains. The fabric acoustical walls (in onyx) and the walls and bulkhead (in Dulux monument) were chosen to give the room a dark sophisticated atmosphere.

The extensive acoustic treatment in the room works to improve the soundstage of the room, it also prevents sound entering other parts of the home and disturbing anyone. Sound from your speakers travels in waves or vibrations through the air, which then bounce off any surfaces in the room. These surfaces include the walls, floor, ceiling, windows and even the furniture.

Acoustic panels and fabric walls are two ways of helping to reduce this effect – and because they are low profile they are easily integrated into any home. Acoustic panels are made from foam or fabric, which helps to minimise reverberations and echo in smaller spaces that lead to unclear and muddied sound. They do this by soaking up sound waves and stopping them bouncing around a room. The curtains along one wall do the same job, add colour and soften the space by reducing the amount of exposed walls.

Home Theatre Installation: We do all the work ourselves!

What makes us different is that we do all the work ourselves, taking into account your needs, lifestyle and budget.

  • Seating and custom (supply and install)
  • Custom cabinetry (design, supply and installation).

Sometimes you want the very best for your home, with the latest tech and access to sound and vision in every room as well as your outdoor entertainment areas – features you, your family and close friends can enjoy for many years to come.

This project definitely ticked that box with:

  • A full cinema room fitout with 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos sound, star ceiling and custom cinema seating, including installation of tiered step up for seating and carpeting of the room.
  • Multiple lounge rooms fitted with Samsung 85” TV and Sonos ARC wall mounted soundbars.
  • New TV in master bedroom with a connection run to the lounge room for Foxtel access.
  • Sonos controlled speaker system installed in the home’s outdoor areas to cover the pool and bbq area.
  • Games room and man cave fitout with wall mounted TV’s and Sonos Beam soundbar.

If you are not familiar with Dolby Atmos let’s take a look at what this sound format is all about and how you can get it.

What is Dolby Atmos?

You may have seen Dolby Atmos branding on the front of a 4K TVs, home theater receiver or latest soundbar. Sound gurus’ Dolby Laboratories developed Atmos to offer an ‘immersive sound’ and ‘multidimensional experience’ for home theater – and is basically surround sound on steroids.

Atmos adds surround channels that come from overhead to any existing surround-sound set-up. Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers direct sound upward and reflect it off the ceiling to produce incredibly lifelike, overhead sound – so rain sounds like it is falling from above. It does this by giving each individual Atmos speaker multiple channels – including front, surround and ceiling-mounted height channels. By comparison Dolby Atmos has the ability to process up to 128 channels of sound, where with a typical 7.1 setup you get a maximum of 8 channels.

How do I get Dolby Atmos?

If you are wondering how to get the Dolby Atmos experience in your home theatre setup you have a few options:

  • A Dolby Atmos-capable A/V receiver with Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (with ceiling firing speakers)
  • Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar
  • You can also add “Atmos modules” – small speakers which fire upwards – to your existing 5.1, 7.1 or 9.1 setup.
  • You can also install ceiling speakers to create the Atmos effect.

Components supplied and installed

Components supplied and installed in this fit-out included:

  • Epson TW9400 projector
  • 158” fixed frame Cinemascope Elite screen
  • Yamaha RXA3080 receiver
  • 3 x Speakercraft AIM 8 III ceiling speakers as fronts

This client wanted an existing room converted into a dedicated home cinema space. They requested a star ceiling, which was integrated into their coffered ceiling. We also painted the room and ceiling, installed in-wall front speakers alongside the 130” fixed frame screen.

Component highlights of this installation include:

  • Yamaha Aventage RXA2a AV receiver, which has seven channels of power, each rated at 100W into 8 ohms. It has 7.1 channels which allows us to run 5.1.2 with two ceiling speakers delivering height signals. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding are both onboard.
  • The Epson TW9400 projector has 4K/UHD1/3LCD technology for amazing colour brightness, a wide colour gamut for professional colour accuracy and an exceptional 4K visual experience.

Custom cabinetry to house all AV components, including the AV receiver and Foxtel box.

Let’s now take a closer look at this home theatre installation, including the tech behind a star ceiling.

Custom starlight ceiling adds atmosphere

Manual installation of starlight ceiling

We first had Universal hang a couple of TVs in our apartment a few years ago where we got great service. So when we bought our new place a few months ago we gave Andy a call to hang another couple of TV’s. Andy and Mick came out a few days later and did a nice job again. Whilst they were here we discussed some thought s about putting in a theatre room into a space that was under utilized. The room was single level tiled floor 7×3.5 with plenty of windows. That discussion lead to a full on installation with a step up built, carpet laid, custom cabinetry, 7 beautiful leather seats, full curtains and a tremendous picture and sound system that has transformed our house and that room to an awesome space. The quality of the installation is excellent and communication through the process perfect to keep us updated and explain the system. Andy and Mick (Mick the master electrician) are great people, professional work and kept our place nice and tidy each day, Sam in the office well organised, pleasant to deal with and kept us up to date and Andy’s team of contractors also great to work with. Zac the cabinet legend built us a fantastic cabinet, James “the blind guy” and his family did a wonderful job of our drapes, the carpet team efficient and friendly people. Everyone we dealt with were awesome. We are so happy we chose Universal Home Theatre Sydney and as you can tell definitely recommend them.

Who wouldn’t want a wine cellar and home cinema room in your basement?

Well, that’s exactly what this client had in mind when they approached us. We actually surprised ourselves how much we managed to squeeze into the room – including a monster Grandview 120” fixed screen, 2 levels of seating and all the audio/video/streaming smarts you could wish for!

As you can see from the before/after shots, this project required our team to use all our skills from the design, to the supply of all AV components and all structural works. This included blocking in walls, building bulkheads and building step ups and platforms – as well as installing all the hardware, cabling and software.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the gear we installed in more detail.

Gear highlights of this installation…

  • Grandview 120” Fixed Acoustical screen, so no one misses any of the action. This screen has a unique woven structure which is 4K compatible for the truest, most vivid and dynamic images. It is also an acoustical screen, which means the fabric helps to absorb sound in the room, not reflect it.
  • Yamaha Aventage amplifier, which is a fully featured 7.2 channel home receiver, dynamic 110 Watt amplifier with 7 channels of amplification for crystal clear dialogue, extra oomph of sound effects and surround sound.
  • Origin Acoustics in wall fronts and Thin Fit rear in-ceiling speakers, for an immersive audio experience – so the roar of the crowd, music and dialogue will all be crystal clear.
  • Epson EH-TW9400 DLP projector, an award-winning DLP projector that scores highly based on its ability to handle HDR, vibrant colours and excellent sense of depth. DLP projectors have higher light output than a LED projector, which is enhanced by Epson’s 4K Enhancement pixel shifting technology, which basically makes any input look like high resolution 4K.
  • Manhattan acoustic panels, which help to minimise reverberations and echo in smaller spaces that lead to unclear and muddied sound. Acoustic panels are made from an absorbent foam, which helps to stop sound waves pinging around a room. The most obvious benefit is that sound coming from your home theatre audio is clear, which makes dialogue easy to understand and bass sounds are not muffled. Acoustic panels have an NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating which measures how much of the sound it can absorb. For example a NRC rating of .80 means that the panel will absorb 80% of the sound.

Here is a more detailed list of all the tech and features we managed to squeeze in:

  • Epson 9400 projector
  • Grandview 120” Fixed Acoustical Transparent screen
  • Origin Acoustics LCR65 in wall fronts as LCR Front in walls
  • Origin Acoustics Thin Fit TF37EX as rear in ceiling speakers
  • Yamaha Aventage RXA4A amplifier
  • Apple TV
  • Manhattan Acoustic Panels
  • Whole-home zoned audio with Sonos
  • Recessed ceiling lighting
  • Step ups and platforms for the Manhattan seating
  • Carpet supply and installation

For this client, who had just purchased a new home, they wanted to spec out an existing room measuring 7.5m x 3.8m, and convert it into a dream home cinema room.

This project definitely ticked the box with:

  • A full cinema room fitout with 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos sound, including 3 x in ceiling fronts, and 3 x pairs of in-ceiling rears
  • Custom cinema seating, with tiered step up for seating and carpeting of the room.
  • Manhattan New Yorker Pro custom cinema seating with step LED lighting
  • Full custom cabinetry installed to house all the AV components
  • Acoustical curtains around the whole room

We also carried out a full audio and video calibration. For TV’s and projectors this means you get the right skin tones, clarity and clarity from your picture; and for speakers and home theatre audio it can make a big difference to the overall soundstage and sonic clarity you experience.

Let’s take a closer look at this installation, including the tech behind Dolby Atmos and also what subwoofers speakers do in a surround sound setup.

How does Dolby Atmos work and how do I get it?

Developed by world-famous acoustic engineers, Dolby Laboratories, Atmos is their latest evolution in ‘immersive sound’ for home theater environments.

The highlight of this sound format is that it gets you additional surround channels ‘from above’ – so any sounds that come from overhead, like rain or a helicopter. It achieves this by being able to process up to 128 channels of sound, where with a typical 7.1 setup you get a maximum of 8 channels – and giving each individual Atmos speaker multiple channels – including front, surround and ceiling-mounted height channels.

To be able to get Dolby Atmos you need:

  • Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers direct sound upward and reflect it off the ceiling to produce incredibly lifelike, overhead sound – so rain sounds like it is falling from above.

  • A Dolby Atmos-enabled receiver that can decode and push out this sound format.

Let’s now look at subwoofers and what they do in a home cinema setup.

What are subwoofers and do I need them?

If you watch a lot of action movies or like your music delivered with a solid thump chances are you will want subwoofers in your audio setup.

Why?

Subwoofers are speakers that deliver low frequency sounds – in the 20-200 Hz range, also known as bass sounds. While your traditional front facing two-channel or surround sound setup can produce some of this range, they can’t come close to a dedicated subwoofer. The result with a subwoofer is a fuller, more vibrant sound stage – and real oomph to any action scene involving explosions or any other impacts. They also make any gameplay – on a PS or XBox more involving and dramatic.

For this large downstairs space the client wanted to convert the area to a luxury home cinema room with a bar off to the side.

Our contribution to the home cinema portion of the works included:

  • Building out the front wall to make the screen appear it is ‘floating’, a feature which will have led strip lighting installed around the edges.
  • Changing the framing and building a new bulkhead at the rear of the room so in-ceiling Dolby Atmos speakers could be installed.
  • Installing a step up or riser so a rear row of luxury cinema style seating could be installed, including carpeting and painting of all new installed works

Let’s understand the benefits of installing a riser or step up in a home theatre setting.

The benefits of installing a riser or step up

A riser or step up is simply an elevated section that is installed to optimise the viewing experience if you have multiple rows of home theater seating – just like in a real cinema.

A step up also enables you to fit in more seating if you are constrained by the width of your home theatre room or space. For example, with a riser or step up you could fit in two rows of three seats, with the rear viewers able to see the screen with no obstructions – thanks to the elevation the riser provides. You need to take into account the minimum and maximum distance from the screen, and place the riser with these measurements in mind. Seating should also be placed with enough room for people to move freely to and from their seats.

The raised platform of the step up is typically constructed from timber framing, at a height that suits the size of the room, with reference to distance to the screen as well as the height of the chair or front row of seating. The final touch is to carpet the step up for aesthetics and sound proofing, and install the luxury home seating.

The client also specified a 5.2.2 Dolby Atmos system with overhead Atmos fronts – all powered via a Yamaha RXA1080 receiver. If you are not familiar with Atmos here is a brief overview of it and how you can get it.

What is Dolby Atmos and how do you get it?

Dolby Atmos is Dolby Laboratories ‘immersive sound’ and ‘multidimensional experience’ for home theater – basically surround sound on steroids.

Atmos main feature is that it adds surround channels that come from overhead to any existing surround-sound set-up.

If you want to Atmos in your home theatre setup here are they ways you can get it:

  • A Dolby Atmos-capable A/V receiver with Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (with ceiling firing speakers).

  • Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar.

  • You can also add “Atmos modules” – small speakers which fire upwards – to your existing 5.1, 7.1 or 9.1 setup.

  • You can also install ceiling speakers to create the Atmos effect.

Here is an idea of all the components installed for this client.

Components supplied and installed

We took over this large (7m x 3m) home theatre room while this new build house was still being constructed, with the client requesting a number of features including:

  • Cinema-style luxury seating with a double step up to allow 3 rows of seats to be installed.
  • A 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos system built around a Yamaha RXA2080 AV receiver and Jamo in-ceiling speakers.
  • Cabinetry, acoustic panels and carpet installation.

If you are not familiar with cinema style seating in a home theatre environment let’s take a closer look at the practicalities of installing seating in a dedicated home cinema room or open plan living area.

Installing home cinema seating

If you want the best seat in the house, installing home cinema seating can help you take your home theatre space to the next level. Here are all the practicalities you need to think about when planning your project:

  • How much space do I have to work with?
  • How many seats and rows do I want?
  • What is the optimum placement or layout of the seating to optimise visibility and sound quality?
  • What is the optimum viewing distance?
  • Do I need a riser or tiered step up for optimum visibility for rear seats?
  • Do I need LED step lighting for safety and ambience?
  • Does my room need soundproofing?

We can take care of all aspects of your home cinema seating needs, including all structural works like building tiered step ups and platforms, carpet supply and installation – as well as custom seating supply and install.

Do you have a room in the house that is underutilised or could be repurposed?
This client did just that, asking us to remodel an old storage room and transform it into a state of the art home theatre space. So we did just that, starting by gutting it and then replacing the ceiling sheeting, painting, cabinetry installation and then onto the install of all the kit. Yes, we definitely got our hands dirty on this one, but then I think you will agree the end result is worth it – and the client was also very happy.

Besides the awesome view project highlights of this installation included:

  • Epson TW9400, a HD projector with vibrant colours and excellent sense of depth, and featuring Epson’s 3LCD technology, which is based around three distinct liquid crystal chips. UK tech magazine What Hi-Fi? commended it’s ‘vibrancy and sense of depth’ and gave it a perfect score for picture, features and build. A single 3,000-hour rated lamp means you will have many years of watching before you have to replace it.
  • Yamaha Aventage RXV6A, a 7.2-channel, 100 Watt AV receiver with all the latest in audio and video, including Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization, DTS:X, wireless streaming and more.
